Ikväll: Argentinsk tv-spelsmusik på Södra teatern med Super Guachin. Ombyggda C-64, upphottade gameboys etc. Cumbia enligt det där latinamerikanska (och afrikanska) bruket att genrebestämma musik utifrån nästan enbart rytmen. Electronica annars. Här är i alla fall en intervju.

Wanlov och Ayisoba i Stockholm - del 3

The fokn dunaquest in Budapest, ja alltså Wanov och Mensas första album som Fokn Bois, recenseras på onsdag. Mer om det, och duons alldeles förtjusande hiplifemusikal, då. Men först ett klipp från i somras som jag just råkade snubbla över.

Selam, en sammanfattning

Selam African Festival. Aurelio avslutade på ett alldeles lysande sätt. Framför mig dansade en lycklig före detta skivaffärsägare, strax därpå sa han skrattande att den mest afrikanska artisten på festivalen inte ens var från Afrika. Aurelio kommer från Honduras.

Solsystemet

I kväll: Systema Solar. Världens bästa gruppnamn, i synnerhet för ett soundsystem. Också den allra roligaste bokningen i Södra teaterns stora cumbiasatsning. Att det colombianska 8-mannabandets musik inte självklart kan klassificeras som cumbia är i sammanhanget helt ointressant.

A humble start for the Roskilde Festival, Pj Harvey, Iron Maiden and rain. None of it too interesting. But before that, Frente Cumbiero from Colombia! Great concert and an interesting talk about cumbia afterwards with Mario Galeano, the band's musical director. More of that in a few days.

There are quite a few cumbia bands at Roskilde this year and meantime in Stockholm Américo and Chico Trujillo are playing at the Selam Sounds mini festival. For the benefit of my swedish readers, here's the links to the reviews of Zap Mama's and Seun Kuti's concerts. If I seem a bit negative I, well I guess I was, but at least in the case of Kuti I just couldn't write about the concert without taking into account the impact of the wind, the cold and the seated audience. The show in itself was really good though and the simple fact that he played the here an example of how the jazz festival has become more interesting lately.

I have some poor quality footage of Wanlov and Ayisoba playing at Clarion Sign in Stockholm, but until I'm able to upload it, and perhaps also find some material from their late night jam at Fasching, here's a short clip uploaded by Pidgen Music yesterday.

Stockholm Jazz Festival 1: A lost Ayisoba

The jazz festival has barely started but I already met the cousins (I thought they were brothers) Almou from the Festival au Desert, for a half hour talk about how to arrange a festival in the poorest part of one of the poorest countries in the world. Also said hi to Panji Anoff, Wanlov the Kubolor and King Ayisoba. Wanlov arrived barefeet, honouring his nickname The African Gypsy and defying the realities of Swedish summer (14 degrees and rain). King Ayisoba wore traditional garments and got lost at the airport, his pick up got the name wrong, maybe he was confused by the "king" part of it. Ayisoba still managed to get a ride into town somehow, waiting out the confusion at the hotell before the organizers were able to locate him.
But more of them tomorrow. Now the real festival starts. Tonight I will see, and write about, Zap Mama, who travelled far from her congolese roots. Too far? That's exactly what I intend to find out.

No visa for Yaa Pono... means Wanlov is coming

As always with african artists visiting, the visa procedure is a major factor. And that has nothing to do with third world bureaucrazy, only with Europe's fear of people staying here. A few hours ago I got to know that Yaa Pono had not been granted his visa in time. Which deprives Stockholm of one of the more interesting, up and coming hip life artists. But the replacement is quite good. Wanlov the Kubolor already have the required visa, since he's been touring in Europe until recently. So it will be King Ayisoba and Wanlov performing on saturday, first in the afternoon at the hotel Clarion Sign, after mine and Panji's hiplife-talk. Then, late at night, at the jam session at jazz club Fasching.

I know this is starting to seem like a blog about Ghana. It is not. But going there last autumn left so many leads to follow up. In this specific case though, they seem to have followed me up. A few weeks ago Clara from Stockholm Jazz Festival called after reading my hiplife text and asked for people in Ghana to invite for a panel talk and perhaps a concert. Leading to record company owner and producer Panji Anoff coming to Stockholm in a week and a half for a discussion about the music industries of Africa, traditional elements in modern music or, well, whatever we decide to talk about. See us at Clarion Sign Hotel Saturday 18/6 14.00.
I also mentioned Yaa Pono, King Ayisoba and Wanlov the Kubulor and the two first ended up accompanying Panji and will play after the discussion and are also supposed to appear in some way later the same night at the jam session at jazz club Fasching.

Not so Magic

Also, here's a link to my review of ivorian zouglou stars Magic Systems new, rather dull album Touté Kalé in Svenska Dagbladet. My main points: Auto tune used as a mark of contemporariness, without finesse and (of course) not as a singing aid, which could have been excused. But worse is the surprising lack of interesting rhythms.

Their pre auto tune stuff is sharper though and I'm still looking forward to the concert 3/6 at Münchenbryggeriet here in Stockholm, if a little less than before.

Ebo Taylor in Stockholm or The missing link

The minor news is that I decided to switch to English in this blog. Due to the visitor statistics and the quite international subject (and of course at the risk of being ridiculed). A bit more interesting perhaps is the fact that Ebo Taylor is playing in Stockholm tonight at Göta Källare. Just having an old highlife star playing here is something. But Ebo Taylor is more than that, he is also a living example of the connections between highlife and afro beat. I didn't get the chance to meet him in person in Accra but I got to hear a lot about him from mr Essiebons, a gentleman in his eighties and also head of the family run Essiebons Music, with Ebo Taylor and CK Mann as its biggest stars.

Anyway, here's Taylor talking about the development of highlife and the influence of Nigerian music in Ghana.

And a Spotify link to Life and Death, the album Ebo Taylor released last year, mixing re-recorded classics and newly written songs. All in a slightly more psychedelic setting than you would have expected.

27/5: Linking to my review. A reader has commented on me not mentioning how good the concert in fact was. I thought I did, but maybe I got too stuck in the history of afro beat and other fascinating topics. Reading this review of the same concert, it does strike me that I sound a bit theoretical. So, just to be clear about it, Ebo Taylor indeed was awesome.

Nueva cumbia och ett eklektiskt smorgasbord

Den här bloggen ska inte förvandlas till en kyrkogård för länkar till mina egna artiklar, men de senaste veckorna är det ungefär vad jag hunnit med. Här är i alla fall recensionen av det chilenska nueva cumbia-bandet Chilombiana, som spelade på Etablissemanget (det som brukade kallas Mosebacke) i lördags. Och cumbia är en stil som ni kommer att få höra mycket mer av framöver. Se det som ett löfte, inte som ett hot.

Låt mig också få tipsa om  Jo/No's utmärkta blogg eller eklektiska smorgasbord. Där kan man bland annat kan läsa om min nubiske favorit, Ali Hassan Kuban. Och lyssna förstås. Låt mig rekommendera låt nr 2.

Harrachi sjunger Harrachi, eller ett blygsamt fynd i Paris

Det är några år sedan jag upptäckte Kamel el Harrachi. Det var mest tur, han hade gett ut en oansenlig, nästan ful cd där hans ansikte går över i ett fotografi av hans far, den kände algeriske oudspelaren och chaabisångaren Dahmane el Harrachi, men den hade i alla fall skyltplats på Fnac. Nova, tror jag det var, gillade den.
Musiken är inte heller den så anslående till att börja med, enkla, trogna tolkningar av faderns sånger. Inte alls som när exempelvis Rachid Taha tolkar Dahmane el Harrachi. Men det var någonting med hans sång, enkelheten och intensiteten som gjorde att jag fastnade och efter det har jag försökt att nämna honom då och då, till exempel i recensionen av praktverket Africa - 50 years of music and independence.
Chaabi är förresten en av alla de där folkliga, urbana stilarna som utvecklats kring Medelhavet och som från att ha ansetts som föraktliga sakta rört sig uppåt i samhället. Förmodligen kan man se den som ett förstadium till raï.
Just det, poängen: i morgon lördag kommer Kamel el Harrachi till Södra teatern, på Franska institutets initiativ.

En avstickare till Sverige och Siri Karlsson

Det är sällan jag skriver om svenska saker här, eller för den delen folkmusik. Jag har egentligen inga planer på att börja med det heller, men ska man göra ett undantag för något är det Grand Fuego med Siri Karlsson. Eller för att citera Kalle Tiderman i SvD, "I sitt musikaliska tilltal är de i en klass för sig. Deras andra platta Gran Fuego är kort och gott fantastisk." (Patrik Lindgrens recension i GP är också mycket positiv).
Här har de utvecklat allt som var bra med till exempel Nästa Bandhagen och gör folkmusik som är helt och fullt samtida. Med bara en liten överdrift kan man istället vända på det och så har man experimenterande pop djupt, djupt rotad i traditionen. Plötsligt inte så långt ifrån det som många av de afrikanska artister jag skriver om försöker göra.

Calypso Blues

Theophilus London kommer till Strand på lördag kväll. Nästan precis samtidigt låser jag upp dörren till en grovt tillyxad timmerstuga i Funäsdalen. Ska jag vara missnöjd? Jag vet inte, egentligen är det ju bara den här låten, en cover på Nat King Coles Calypso Blues, som jag vill höra.
